The House Where Dirty Pop Was Playing
One of the most surreal moments I've had in real estate happened this past year.
When I was in fourth grade, I moved in with my dad and started at Coldwater Elementary School in Oxford.
Not long after, I made one of my best friends.
Like most childhood friendships, we spent a lot of time together. We went to talent shows, honor roll events, school functions, birthday parties, and all the little things that make up childhood memories.
I can still picture the house she grew up in.
It was a flat brick rancher, which is funny because now, as an adult, that's actually one of my favorite styles of homes.
One of my biggest memories from that house was a birthday party we had there years ago.
It was the year NSYNC released the album Dirty Pop.
I remember buying her that CD for her birthday, and several other people did too. At the time, it felt like the greatest gift in the world.
It's funny the random things we remember.
As the years passed, life moved on like it does for everyone.
We grew up.
Started careers.
Built lives.
But her parents and I always stayed connected. They followed my business, and whenever we'd run into each other in public, we'd stop and catch up.
A few years ago, they contacted me to help sell her grandfather's home after he passed away.
I was honored to help them through that process.
Then this past year, they called me again.
This time, it was to sell the very house I used to spend time in as a child.
The same house where birthday parties were held.
The same house where childhood memories were made.
The same house where a bunch of fourth graders thought an NSYNC CD was the greatest thing ever.
Standing there as an adult felt different.
Not because of the transaction.
Not because of the sale.
But because it was one of those moments that makes you realize how much time has passed and how connected our lives can remain, even decades later.
As Realtors, we often talk about houses.
But houses are really just the backdrop.
What matters are the people and the memories inside them.
This home was part of my childhood long before it was ever one of my listings.
And having the opportunity to help a family I have known for so many years close one chapter and begin another is something I won't forget.
Sometimes real estate is about contracts.
Sometimes it's about negotiations.
And sometimes it's about standing in a house where you once danced around to Dirty Pop and realizing life has a funny way of coming full circle.
