You’re almost there! These are your final to-dos before closing to keep things smooth, on schedule, and stress-free. From utilities and forwarding mail to a final walkthrough, this checklist keeps everything tied up neatly before you hand over the keys.
Last 48 Hours Before Closing
Seller — Final To-Dos
- Utilities: Leave power & gas ON for ~2 days after closing in case of timing delays. The buyer’s transfer should cover the switch-over.
- Set forwarding: USPS Change of Address — start here.
- Final sweep: Remove personal items, empty bins, and take meter photos for your records.
Buyer — Final To-Dos
- Utilities: Call or submit online to start/transfer 2 days before closing so there’s no gap in service:
- Power — Alabama Power: start/stop/transfer
- Gas — Spire: start service
- Internet: Check providers by address: BroadbandNow or HighSpeedInternet.
- Set up autopay: Add power/gas and any new utilities to your bill-pay or an all-in-one service like doxo.
Update Your Address (IDs & Records)
- Driver License (ALEA): Update your driver record (no fee) with ALEA’s form — Change of Address (PDF). ALEA’s new LEADS system expands online options for updates. Learn more.
- Vehicle Registration/Tags: Address changes are handled by your county tag office — find yours here: AL Vehicle Licensing Offices.
- Voter Registration: Update your voter record online: Alabama (Vote.gov).
Tip: After you update your driver record, you can purchase a duplicate card later if you want your new address printed on the physical license.
