One House Between Them
One of the things I love most about real estate is getting to watch people move through different chapters of life.
Over ten years ago, I went on a listing appointment and built a connection with a husband and wife. Like many relationships in real estate, life moved forward. Years passed, and while we weren't talking regularly, we stayed connected through Facebook and the occasional interaction online.
A few years ago, I received a call from the wife.
A lot had changed since we first met. She had gone through a divorce, and her mother was planning to move here from across the state. Their goal was simple: they wanted to be close to one another.
Not necessarily in the same house. Not even next door. But ideally in the same neighborhood, or at least a short drive apart.
So we started looking.
If someone had told me how it was going to turn out, I probably wouldn't have believed them.
After searching, we found two homes on the same street.
Not a few streets over.
Not in the same subdivision.
The same street.
With only one house between them.
I still remember how excited her mother was.
She was moving to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren, and now she would get to be a much bigger part of their daily lives. The convenience was wonderful, but it was really about something bigger than that.
It was about family.
It was about being present for birthdays, school events, holidays, and all of those little moments that make up a life.
Both purchases came together, we closed, and that's where they've happily lived ever since.
Or at least until the next chapter came along.
A few years later, I received another call.
It was the daughter.
The first thing she said was, "I'm not sure if you remember me..."
I couldn't help but laugh.
"Of course I remember you," I told her. "I still have your number saved in my phone."
She was ready to sell her home.
And just like that, we found ourselves working together again.
Since then, we've listed the property and successfully gotten it under contract, bringing her one step closer to whatever comes next.
Moments like this remind me that real estate is rarely just one transaction.
It's years.
It's relationships.
It's watching families grow, change, relocate, and begin new chapters.
It's helping someone buy a home, and years later being the person they call when it's time for the next step.
Those are the moments that mean the most to me.
Because while life moves on and circumstances change, one thing always stays the same: the relationships you build along the way.
That's why real estate has never been just about a transaction for me. It's about the relationships that continue long after the closing table.
And I'll never forget the family that wanted to be close together and somehow ended up with only one house between them.
